CIBO attended a seminar on “Fighting Organised Crime: Going for the Money” on 16 March organized by the Centre for European Policy Studies. This subject is of real interest to the Channel Islands, as the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey work proactively and cooperate closely with other jurisdictions in order to fight against organised crime. Guest speaker EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström, spoke of the need for harmonized legislation, better cooperation with third countries and between Member States and the introduction of measures to fight corruption. Particular focus was placed upon the Commission’s proposals, unveiled this week, to introduce new measures to facilitate the freezing and confiscation of the proceeds of crime.
