Channel Islands/France: annual summit with Normandy and La Manche

On 4 October 2019, the Minister for External Affairs of Guernsey, Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, and the Minister for External Relations of Jersey, Senator Ian Gorst, attended the annual political summit with the region of Normandy and the department of La Manche, hosted this year by the department of La Manche in Cherbourg. Hervé Morin, President of the Region of Normandy and Marc Lefèvre, President of the Conseil Départemental of La Manche, jointly chaired the summit.

At the summit, a cooperation agreement that promotes greater partnership working between the three jurisdictions was renewed. Various subjects were discussed, including Brexit and its implications for the Channel Islands, including fishing and contingency planning for a no-deal exit. Areas of regional cooperation were also discussed such as educational links, cultural initiatives and economic opportunities. Preparations for the meeting on the Channel Islands side were coordinated by the Bureau des Iles Anglo-Normandes, the joint government office in Caen.
